Among garrigues and ponds, 15 km south of Narbonne, near the Mediterranean coast, on the Réserve Africaine de Sigean more than 3 800 animals share an area of more than 300 ha.
This zoological park is designed to give the animals a territory vast enough to allow nearly the same behaviour as in the wild.

As a zoological Park, la Réserve Africaine de Sigean has four aims :

Research :

Add something to human knowledge about wild fauna.

Conservation :

To breed animals species which are threatened for the future generations.

Education :

Help to a better understanding of wild animals, their interdependance and their relationships with their environment.

Recreation :

To have the joy of giving to people the sight of the beauty of wild animals in a
natural surrounding.

The rising number of visitors shows a growing interest for this type of zoological park which gives a natural environment to the animals. In 1989, an association called ARAS (Amis de la Réserve Africaine de Sigean) was created. This association participates and contributes to the research, education and conservation policies of the park.
